A seminar about feminism and gender from an artistic point of view.
Who, what, where and when.
WHO: We are a group of Norwegian artists and art students invited to have a seminar followed by an art exhibition at the artist run gallery Carol 53 here in Bucharest, with the theme Body art, Gender and Feminism. For the occasion we have formed an art group were professional artists and students work together in a non-hierarchical structure. This structure has its fundament in the ideology of the experimental art school ”Prosjektskolen” in Oslo, Norway, where we all have our base.
WHAT: The title ”Hear me in silence” refers to the first sentence in Norse mythology, told by the ”Volve”; a female sharman – comparable to the Oracle in Delfi. The book of Norse mythology is called ”Edda” which means ”Grandmother”. The poetic myth of the raise and fall of humanity, Gods and Goddesses is called ”Voluspå”; the prophecy of the Volva.
We find it interesting that the Norse myths are spoken by a woman, and chose the title of the seminar and exhibition because of the obvious connection to the theme feminism, since the term historically sprung from the demand of women’s right to vote, and thereby to be heard.
Heard in silence were the opposite, for thousands of years, to silence her. Like the overseen Echo in the myth of Narcissus, who is punished to never speak her own thoughts, but only to answer with sentences already spoken by her surroundings.
The seminar will take the form of lectures, interaction and group discussions.
We suggest laboratory in favor of auditory.
WHEN & WHERE: The seminar will take place this weekend at Carol 53. We start at Saturday the 17th at 11 am, with an introduction and welcome, followed up by an artist presentation by Vilde von Krogh.
Then we run from the Sufragettes, known as ”The first wave”, towards the second and third wave of feminism, body art and queer theory. The talk will be backed up by talks, discussion and film screening by Romanian based feminist groups and professor of theory Razwan Ion. We will serve dinner for free after the screening of artist Kjersti Vetterstad’s documentary movie ”The Agronaut”.
Sunday we start at12.00 with an artist presentation by Kjersti Vetterstad. We move on with lectures, slideshows and discussions, related to where we are now and what we can work towards in the future when it comes to equal rights for everybody, from sex, gender, race and nationality.
The seminar is free, and everybody who finds the subject worth discussing are very welcome to join and participate. Full program will be sent out during the next few days. We also welcome you to our exhibition opening Thursday 29th of October at the same place.
Hope to see you there. We will hear each other – if not in silence, so with respect.
ALL VOICES ARE WELCOME!
